Today, around seven in 10 Americans use social media to connect with friends and family, engage with content, share information, and entertain themselves. As the social media landscape continues to evolve every year, it has unequivocally become an essential element in any brand strategy.

“These days, brands are trying in more ways than ever to connect with their audiences. It’s becoming harder for them to catch our attention across a range of social media platforms.” Karen Rangel

When it comes to engaging with a very niche target, you have to spend time to get to know them, including the way they use social media.

LAPIZ, being a multicultural advertising agency, focuses on US Hispanic markets for our clients. We have to be on top of emerging trends, so that we can deliver the desired results.

US Hispanics spend nearly 66% more time per week watching videos on their smartphones, compared to the overall market, with Facebook and YouTube being the top two online video platforms used. The content they watch clearly reflects the Hispanic values of preserving culture and language—73% of third-generation Hispanics watch videos that speak to their heritage, and two out of every three bilingual Hispanics watch videos in Spanish.

New features in social media

Check out some of the new features that are just launching, so you can start planning to apply this to your next campaign. Make sure you target your audience accurately!

SNAPCHAT:

Snapchat will now directly link to your tagged friends in your Snapchat story! Unlike the tagging option before, the “@” symbol will now be accompanied by a swipe-up option where users can directly access the tagged account.

FACEBOOK:

  • Breaking-news label: Facebook has added a “Breaking” label to highlight current, trending events in real time.

  • Job listings: Facebook has introduced a “Jobs” dashboard where businesses can post openings and job seekers can search for opportunities by criteria such as location and industry. Seekers can also “Apply Now” for the posted jobs with the information that's already listed in their profile and include other relevant information.

INSTAGRAM:

  • Post scheduling via Hootsuite: Finally! An Instagram scheduling platform that actually publishes your content directly to the app. Hootsuite is teaming up with Instagram to create a scheduling app that enables users to create Instagram content and manage all of their accounts in one place. Currently, the update is only available to larger businesses, but there is talk of expanding the service to all accounts in the future!

  • Instagram is currently testing a new “explore” page. Here’s a peek at what it looks like in action:

  • Group video chat: Instagram is launching its very own video chat, giving users the ability to talk privately with one or more people over a video call.

  • Creating your own Instagram “Stories” face filters with AR camera effects: Facebook is opening up the filter floodgates by bringing AR (Augmented Reality) camera effects to Instagram! This means that creators, influencers, and brands will now be able to create their own custom Instagram filters using Facebook’s existing AR Studio.

  • Share from Spotify your favorite songs to Instagram with new sharing tools for “Stories”: Now, when you’re listening to a song, playlist, or album you love in Spotify and want to share it to your Instagram “Stories,” all you have to do is tap the new “Share” button in the Spotify app!

  • Share GoPro footage: Users will also soon be able to share their latest GoPro footage directly to Instagram!

  • Anti-bullying: Instagram is now filtering out bullying comments with its latest update: The new anti-bullying feature uses machine learning to identify language that’s intended to harass or upset people.

TWITTER:

  • Tweet Bookmarking: Twitter has added a new feature that allows you to privately save tweets in an archive-like format. To save a tweet for later, simply click on the post’s “share” icon to access the “Bookmarks” option.

PINTEREST:

  • Webinars: Pinterest is now launching a set of educational webinars about the features of its platform that will be accessible to any of its users. The sessions are targeted toward marketers who are interested in utilizing the platform to its full capacity.

  • Shopping Ads: Pinterest’s automated “Shopping Ads” tool is now opening up to new marketers. Instead of just tackling large companies, the utility will now also be available to hundreds of additional businesses. The tool's expansion is set to give Pinterest a leg up in the marketing world.

And that’s a wrap!

The task for your brand now is to make these trends a priority in your 2018 marketing efforts.
